Auberge du Soleil Redefines Napa Valley Romance with Eight Reimagined Guest Rooms

RUTHERFORD, Calif. (May X, 2017) Auberge du Soleil, California Wine Country’s quintessential adult getaway, has unveiled eight new “Deluxe” guest rooms and suites developed by San Francisco interior designer Suzanne Tucker, of Tucker & Marks, Inc., San Francisco. The latest phase of its full property transformation features two new maisons Maison Arles and Maison Bandol each offering two king rooms and two one-bedroom suites with clean, contemporary architectural interiors, luxurious custom finishes and outdoor living spaces that raise the bar for romance in Napa Valley.

Inspired by the relaxed sophistication of the South of France and infused with Northern California soul, Auberge du Soleil offers 50 guest rooms and suites terraced into a picturesque hillside olive grove. All Deluxe category accommodations offer sun-drenched interiors that showcase Tucker’s palette of sandy beiges, creamy limestone and shades of pale terra cotta mixed with the warmth of bleached and cerused woods. French-style steel-framed floor-to-ceiling doors and windows dramatically showcase panoramic valley and hillside views, and saturate the rooms with natural light. All rooms and suites feature spacious terraces that capitalize on wine country’s exceptional outdoor lifestyle, and include stylish residential appointments such as fireplaces and spa-inspired bathrooms.

“Auberge du Soleil has always set the standard for intimacy, romance and luxury in Napa Valley,” said George Goeggel, Managing Partner, Auberge du Soleil. “The completion of this phase of our guest room redesign project furthers our vision for an uncensored, indulgent haven, taking the provocative allure of Auberge du Soleil to a new level.”

Architectural Digest AD 100 2017 designer Suzanne Tucker, conceived the rooms with iconic valley and hillside views as the focal point. All rooms feature custom-crafted mattresses, made by San Francisco-based McRoskey Mattress Company, to provide a premium sleep experience. A hand-carved headboard of mirrored fretwork and Corsica and Saint-Tropez textiles that Tucker designed exclusively for Auberge du Soleil, adorn the bed, underscoring a meticulous attention to detail.

“This redesign blends the natural romance of Auberge du Soleil’s spectacular setting with a contemporary sensuality that is very fresh,” said Tucker. “The effect is a sophisticated country escape that is chic and seductive.”

All guest rooms are outfitted with high-definition Samsung televisions, Blue Ray DVD players, Bose Bluetooth audio players and high-speed wireless Internet to keep guests effortlessly connected. In the custom of Auberge du Soleil, all guest rooms include a wealth of complimentary special touches, including daily fresh fruit, a welcome bottle of wine, fully stocked minibar and refreshments, as well as valet and self-parking, swimming pool and fitness center, tennis court, sculpture garden, and soaking pools and steam rooms at the Auberge Spa.

Auberge du Soleil’s unparalleled style is one reason the hotel continues to receive the highest accolades in the hospitality industry. Consistently ranked as one of the World’s Best Hotels by Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler and other influential publications, Auberge du Soleil is a Forbes Five Star hotel and a member of Relais & Châteaux, the most prestigious collection of small luxury hotels and restaurants in the world.

In conjunction with the opening of the new rooms, Auberge du Soleil is launching a limited-time summer getaway offer. The In the Swim mid-week promotion includes a choice of luxurious accommodations, daily breakfast for two in the hotel’s Michelin Star Restaurant, $100 resort credit, two complimentary cocktails at La Plage – the property’s tranquil adult swimming pool and 15% off all services at the award-winning Auberge Spa. Auberge du Soleil Improves on Perfection by Unveiling Luxurious New Maison Calais La Plage

Napa Valley’s Iconic Inn Continues its Legacy of Excellence with Beautifully Designed New Rooms by Famed San Francisco Designer

RUTHERFORD, CALIFORNIA (October 2015) – Auberge du Soleil, the iconic flagship of Auberge Resorts and Napa Valley’s legendary romantic inn, is pleased to announce the continued evolution of its heritage of distinctive refinement with a stunning new design by famed San Francisco interior designer, Suzanne Tucker, of Tucker & Marks, Inc. beginning with the four rooms in the new Maison Calais La Plage.

Originally fashioned by renowned designer Michael Taylor channeling the rustic sophistication of Provence, Taylor protégé and San Francisco interior designer Suzanne Tucker expands on his timeless vision for Auberge du Soleil’s maisons by creating the quintessential private villa through elegant organic design. Inspired by the colors of the South of France, Tucker’s design creates a romantic, country inn atmosphere through a muted color palette of sand, pale terracotta and ocher. She ensures each room is unique and distinct continuing Auberge du Soleil’s tradition of luxury and comfort with customized details utilizing bespoke fabrics and textiles. Tucker celebrates the abundant beauty of the Napa Valley by bringing the outside in with oak headboards and dramatic embroidery inspired by the 16th Century “Tree of Life” tapestry symbolizing growth, renewal and abundance. Bookshelves filled with objects reflective of home lend a residential, personal feel to the warm and inviting rooms.

“Our approach to the new maisons at Auberge du Soleil is to retain the original iconic essence of Provence while continuing to evolve and customize the rooms to best accommodate the way our guests live,” said George Goeggel, Managing Partner of Auberge du Soleil. “The new design enhances the luxurious and tranquil haven away from home Auberge experience.”

The new open layout of the guestroom extends into a sumptuous bathroom filled with natural light from the skylight overhead highlighting the muted palette of the light, honey-toned wood while the basket weave mosaic tiling combines traditional and contemporary colors for added dimension and warmth. The addition of sculptural bathtubs, heated limestone floors and detailed stonework make for an exquisitely relaxing spa-like environment, providing a true sense of serenity and escape. Maison exteriors feature ipé trellises and decks, iron-forged sconces and custom colored pale stucco evocative of classic French country styling.

Auberge du Soleil was the vision of legendary French-born restaurateur Claude Rouas, who sought to recreate the sun-drenched ambiance of Provence in the California Wine Country. Perched on the slope of Rutherford Hill overlooking Napa Valley, Auberge du Soleil quickly gained recognition as one of the leading restaurants in Northern California, not only for its superb cuisine, but also its spectacular views of the valley below. In 1985, responding to guest demand, Rouas and business partner Robert Harmon opened the inn, a collection of sun- and earth-toned maisons housing 50 rooms and suites, each with French doors opening onto private terraces and sweeping views of olive groves and the vine-studded valley. As with the restaurant, the maisons were the work of influential designer Michael Taylor, who infused his “California Style” of over scaled furniture, dramatic fabrics and sculptural accessories with the essence of Provence. The suites enchanted guests with their elegantly rustic furnishings, handmade tile floors, abstract paintings and French doors leading to private terraces and panoramic views of the Napa Valley.

Today, the Auberge has evolved into one of America’s most sought-after small luxury hotels and a perennial recipient of the highest accolades from the hospitality industry, discriminating guests and the media. Auberge du Soleil is a member of Relais & Châteaux, the most prestigious collection of small luxury hotels and restaurants in the world. With the introduction of the new Maison Calais La Plage, Suzanne Tucker continues the design evolution of Auberge du Soleil’s tradition of excellence, luxury and comfort for its loyal guests and the next generation of guests to follow.

It’s gratifying to see Auberge Resorts listed again as the best of the best in the country.”

Among the 1,639 luxury U.S. hotels and 273 Caribbean hotels analyzed by U.S. News & World Report, only a fraction were named to a selective list of the Best Hotels. “This is our third year ranking hotels, and the bar continues to climb for luxury properties,” said Chad Smolinski, Vice President of Rankings and Reviews at U.S. News & World Report. “Desirable amenities and hotel loyalty programs will no longer suffice. People are seeking hotels that go above and beyond to give their guests an unforgettable experience. Hotels that consistently meet the high expectations of experts and travelers are recognized in our rankings.”

Auberge du Soleil Unveils New “Tree House” Private Dining Experience

Maison d’Arbre Features Unique and Luxurious Private Dining at Michelin-Starred Auberge du Soleil

RUTHERFORD, CALIFORNIA (April 12, 2012) – Resting above the world renowned, Michelinstarred restaurant Auberge du Soleil, Maison d’Arbre is set to debut in April as a spectacular new private dining experience. Designed by San Francisco-based Suzanne Tucker of Tucker & Marks, one of Architectural Digest’s Top100 designers, Tucker expands on the tree design first introduced at Auberge du Soleil by famed designer Michael Taylor in 1981. Maison d’Arbre provides unparalleled panoramic vistas of the Napa Valley vineyard mosaic from its lofty perspective and reflects the valley’s natural beauty with its design.

“Maison d’Arbre perfectly embodies the iconic culinary experience at Auberge du Soleil” said George Goeggel, Managing Partner of Auberge du Soleil. “Guests savor gourmet meals featuring indigenous Napa Valley ingredients while enjoying the unparalleled views of their origin.”

Inspired by the unique location of Maison d’Arbre, the room features wood and organic accents that complete the natural, tree-house effect of the room. Two sixteen foot cedar planks anchor the corners of the room and rise up from the floor from the dining terrace below for a striking, vertical visual effect highlighting the dramatic peaked roofline. The mottled, organic aesthetic begins with the birch wall covering laid in rectangular pieces for a handcrafted finish. The room is illuminated with a warm glow from the centered fireplace surrounded by a pale limestone mantle and hearth as well as the hanging clustered balls of dried driftwood light fixtures and iron sconces with bronze leaves. Plush, dark custom carpeting reminiscent of bark, lends to the rustic yet highly sophisticated earthy feel.

Just off this great room is a charming balcony; the perfect invitation for a glass of champagne “en plein air” before dinner. Directly opposite the balcony Tucker placed two console tables in warm woods, against a mirrored wall which reflects the spectacular view beyond the balcony, bringing the storied Napa Valley inside.

The private powder room features a bronze gilt finish and reed like, gilded wall coverings with a whimsical bird mirror hanging over an Italian golden ‘Cobra’ marble vanity. Tiling engrained with terracotta, ochre and mossy green echo the gilded tones.

La Maison d’Arbre will accommodate 32 guests for an exquisitely unique private dining experience, with culinary delights created by Robert Curry, Executive Chef, and his team at the iconic Auberge Restaurant.

Auberge du Soleil debuts the renewed restaurant décor, originally fashioned by renowned designer Michael Taylor with Provence in mind and interwoven with sophisticated rustic elements. Taylor protégé and San Francisco interior designer Suzanne Tucker expands on his vision of elegant organic design tied to materials and “found” objects from destinations around the world. Custom-colored persimmon linens are based on 19th century Japanese lotus designs and new tabletops feature pewter chargers, petrified wood trivets and metal votives. Auberge du Soleil also introduces a new deck extending from the private dining level now providing outdoor dining for 50 – 60 guests and up to 120 seated guests in the combined indoor/outdoor space. The deck is perfectly suited for weddings and private events as it overlooks Auberge du Soleil’s
famed panoramic view of Napa Valley.

The suites enchanted guests with their elegantly rustic furnishings, handmade tile floors, abstract paintings and French doors leading to private terraces and sweeping views of the valley below.

Today, under the direction of Executive Chef Robert Curry, the Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil has earned international recognition, including back-to-back Michelin stars while guests also savor “the best seat in Napa Valley.” Featuring the perfect combination of fine cuisine and unparalleled scenery, the Auberge has evolved into one of America’s most sought-after small luxury hotels and a perennial recipient of the highest accolades from the hospitality industry, discriminating guests and the media. Auberge du Soleil is a member of Relais & Châteaux, the most prestigious collection of small luxury hotels and restaurants in the world.

Laden with handmade sweets, created by acclaimed Executive Pastry Chef Paul Lemieux, the cart offers guests a tempting selection that includes chocolate hazelnut truffles, pistachio caramels sprinkled with fleur de sel and amandes au chocolat. The sweet treats are matched by Head Sommelier Kris Margerum with a trio of hard-to-find vintage Madeiras. Guests can choose from an offering of rare vintages that include Blandy’s, Terrantez, 1976, Cossart Gordon, Bual, 1958 and the venerable Broadbent, Malvasia 1933. Auberge du Soleil’s I. Wolk Gallery Merges with Ma(i)sonry

RUTHERFORD, CALIFORNIA (February 10, 2010) – Auberge du Soleil, Napa Valley’s premier luxury resort, is pleased to announce that its signature sculpture gardens will merge with Ma(i)sonry, the highly acclaimed art, design and wine gallery in Yountville. Previously part of the I. Wolk Gallery, the sculpture gardens will continue to operate under the I. Wolk name and with the same level of professionalism that I. Wolk collectors and artists have become accustomed.

“The I. Wolk Gallery sculpture gardens have been an important and unique aspect of our property since 1998,” sayid Mark Harmon, CEO Auberge Resorts. “While we are of course saddened by the passing of Ira Wolk, we look forward to the new partnership with Ma(i)sonry and to continuing our commitment to offering our guests fine art.”

Auberge du Soleil’s sculpture garden currently displays 110 works by 65 California sculptors. The pieces feature a variety of media, including bronze, steel, ceramic, stone and wood, and are located throughout the resort’s 33 acres. The change in gallery ownership will allow Ma(i)sonry to offer Auberge du Soleil’s guests an even greater range of art and design selections, as well as premium communications and services, including access to the gallery’s monthly “Gallery Guide” curriculum of events.

A marvel of landscaping and stone masonry, the resort’s sculpture garden features pieces that have been thoughtfully situated so they harmoniously coexist with the olive trees. More than 500 tons of fieldstone were fashioned into mortar-less stone walls extending more than 7,000 feet. A stream flows through the center of the grove, creating a pleasant, audible trickle and provides a lush backdrop for the art even during the long, dry Napa summer. An arched redwood bridge enables grove wanderers to cross from one side to the other, making the space ideal for quietly gazing at the artwork, having a picnic or a relaxing walk in the shade.

Ma(i)sonry’s proprietor, Michael Polenske, intends to make as few changes as possible to the I. Wolk Galleries, which also have locations in Sonoma and St. Helena, and currently plans to retain the gallery’s name, daily operations, and physical spaces. “We are pleased to continue to offer our guests this unique aspect of our property,” says Harmon. “And, with Ma(i)sonry’s help, we look forward to finding new ways to offer our guests a one-of-a-kind experience.”

Auberge du Soleil Revamps Its Iconic Dining Terrace

Redesign of the Restaurant and Bistro & Bar Deck Enhances Napa Valley’s Most Famous View

RUTHERFORD, CALIFORNIA (February 25, 2010) – Auberge du Soleil, Napa Valley’s most celebrated luxury inn, announced the completion of the redesigned outdoor dining terrace that wraps around its Michelin-starred Restaurant and Bistro & Bar. San Francisco-based interior designer Suzanne Tucker, of Tucker & Marks, focused the project to enhance the resort’s simple elegance and rustic charm, as well as to offer even more sweeping views of the Napa Valley and its Technicolor sunsets.

“The outdoor dining area has long been one of our resort’s greatest attractions, and we wanted to make sure that it would continue to delight our guests for years to come,” said Mark Harmon, CEO Auberge Resorts. “These new improvements enrich our one-of-a-kind dining experience.”

In addition to replacing the decking with durable Redwood and Brazilian Ipe wood, Tucker, the protégé of the resort ’s original designer, Michael Taylor, eliminated columns that had created blind spots, replaced thick wood railing with graceful metal and reconfigured the tables to further showcase the view. “The result opens up the view and reinforces the tranquil, private and casually chic ambiance that Michael created for a magical al fresco dining experience,” she said.

Included in the terrace enhancement were new infrared heaters that will allow patrons to enjoy the experience of dining under the stars on chilly evenings, and ceiling-mounted fans to provide a soothing breeze on warm summer days. A new Bose sound system will provide a topof-the-line listening experience for both live and pre-recorded music, further adding to the resort’s relaxed California elegance.

Auberge du Soliel’s La Galerie is an Ideal Private Dining and Event Space with Spectacular Napa Valley Views

Former Gallery Space Offers Perfect Setting for Intimate Dinners, Special Events And Meetings

RUTHERFORD, CALIFORNIA (October 2009) – Napa Valley’s legendary fine dining venue has always been the “must-visit” restaurant for Wine Country lovers. With La Galerie, guests have the choice of being seen in the Michelin-starred Restaurant or enjoying a private dining experience in an artful and inspired setting. The space features rotating artwork from innovative and visionary local and national artists, as well as beautiful views of the Valley below. La Galerie offers a varied dining experience — in addition to the Restaurant and the Bistro & Bar or for hotel guests, the La Plage poolside lounge, La Pagode and in-room dining — and is a lovely intimate space for romantic dinners and anniversaries.

Auberge du Soleil has always appealed to the art lover. From the original artwork in all the rooms and the offering of art supplies for plein air drawing and painting as a guest amenity, to the Olive Grove Sculpture Garden, much thought has been given to incorporating quality art throughout the resort. La Galerie is an extension of the Auberge’s legacy of marrying fine cuisine and hospitality with art. Located in the main house, La Galerie pays homage to that legacy by featuring a rotating art collection from celebrated artists. Noted native-Californian artist Tom Cies received the honor of being the opening artist, whose work fuses late-20th century Californian themes with the French Modernist Tradition of the early 1900s.

The art-theme extends to the design of the room, which exudes a modern yet comfortable space that is meant to serve as a “blank canvas” for those seeking personalized dining experiences. Floor-to-ceiling windows and French doors open up to a private terrace featuring the same spectacular views of Napa Valley that can be seen from the Bistro & Bar and Restaurant next door.

“Art has always played a role at Auberge du Soleil, be it with our high-level of service or with the quality of our food and wine program, and La Galerie continues to enhance that experience for our guests,” said George Goeggel, Managing Partner, Auberge du Soleil. “Whether it be a romantic dinner for two or a chef’s table experience with friends, La Galerie has something for everyone looking for an artful twist to the refined and exquisite dining experience we are known for.”

Couples seeking a romantic dinner can partake in the popular “A Night to Remember” package at La Galerie, featuring a five-course dinner from the award-winning Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil and optional live-music. The space is also the perfect venue for families celebrating anniversaries and special occasions, such as intimate rehearsal dinners and small wedding receptions, as well as for groups seeking a comfortable space where they can get their creative juices flowing. An outdoor courtyard area can also be incorporated into the experience for a pre-dinner cocktail reception. An added feature at La Galerie is an exhibition plating area from where Executive Chef Robert Curry and his culinary team can be observed preparing prior to serving guests.

For more information about private events and dinner at La Galerie, call 1-800-348-5406 or visit www.aubergedusoleil.com.

‘La Pagode’ Is Inspired By The Design Tradition Of Japanese Ryokans

RUTHERFORD, CALIFORNIA (October 2009) – Long renowned for its sweeping hilltop views of Napa Valley, the award-winning Auberge du Soleil offers a tucked-away haven among the centuries-old olive trees and live oaks of its 33-acre grounds. La Pagode, Auberge’s Asian-inspired pavilion, is a secluded retreat-within-a-retreat, offering a serene space for holistic spa experiences, couples treatments, private meditation and movement classes. By night, La Pagode transforms into an intimate venue for private celebrations, from a romantic dinner for two to a champagne reception for up to 10 guests.

“So many of our guests enjoy the serenity of our olive grove and outdoor sculpture garden that we created a private hideaway that makes the most of the setting,” said George Goeggel, Managing Partner, Auberge du Soleil. “The Asian tradition of indoor-outdoor design fits perfectly in this environment. We’re delighted to offer La Pagode as a space for both wellness activities and intimate events.”

The clean lines and rustic design of ryokans, Japan’s country inns, were inspiration for La Pagode, designed by Sandy Walker, architect of Auberge du Soleil. The Auberge du Soleil Story

Redesign of the Restaurant and Bistro & Bar Deck Enhances Napa Valley’s Most Famous View

RUTHERFORD, CALIFORNIA (January 2008) – What began as a fine California-French restaurant created by Claude Rouas, a leading San Francisco restaurateur, has evolved into one of America’s most sought-after small luxury hotels and a perennial recipient of the hospitality industry’s highest honors. Auberge du Soleil opened as Napa Valley’s first fine-dining venue in 1981, the vision of French-born Rouas, who sought to recreate the sun-drenched ambiance of Provence in the California Wine Country.

Perched on the slope of Rutherford Hill overlooking Napa Valley, the Auberge quickly gained recognition as one of the leading restaurants in Northern California, not only for its superb cuisine, but also its spectacular views of the valley below. In 1985, responding to guest demand, Rouas and business partner Robert Harmon opened the inn, a collection of sun- and earth-toned maisons housing 50 rooms and suites, each with French doors opening onto private terraces and sweeping views of olive groves and the vine-studded valley. As with the restaurant, the maisons were the work of influential designer Michael Taylor, who infused his “California Style” of overscaled furniture, dramatic fabrics and sculptural accessories with the essence of Provence. The suites enchanted guests with their elegantly rustic furnishings, handmade tile floors, abstract paintings and French doors leading to private terraces and sweeping views of the valley below.

“Auberge du Soleil brought a new style of informal elegance, luxury and service tothe world of hospitality 25 years ago,” said George Goeggel, Managing Partner. “For many,it embodies the perfect retreat, and we’ve been pleased to see how many guests have returned again and again throughout the years. Few hotels age gracefully. At 25, the Auberge is better than ever.”

The inn opened to immediate acclaim. Critics called it “Casa Vogue;” “the kind of hotel so often found in Europe – secluded, discreet and elegant – and with wonderful food;” and “a masterpiece of design.” Since then, Auberge du Soleil has repeatedly received some of the highest accolades from the hospitality industry, discriminating guests and the media. In 1988, the Auberge joined Relais & Châteaux, the most prestigious collection of small luxury hotels and restaurants in the world.

Auberge Spa, a retreat modeled after a centuries-old monastery, opened in 2001 and continues to be one of the most acclaimed spas in the industry. With its fountains, private gardens and outdoor soaking pools, the spa provides a physical and emotional barrier from the outside world, offering a setting for peaceful rejuvenation.

In 2007, a dramatic multi-year renovation of all guest rooms, restaurants, pool and outdoor living spaces was completed under the direction of San Francisco designer Suzanne Tucker, Michael Taylor’s protégée, who was involved in the design of the inn’s 1985 interiors. She took her inspiration from Taylor’s original files, including a vintage Pierre Frey fabric that he had admired, and commissioned the company’s Paris subsidiary to custom-dye and weave it exclusively for the Auberge. Its motif and persimmon color are now signature elements seen throughout the resort. The result is a bright, warm look that’s updated, yet bold in Taylor’s fashion and reminiscent of a secluded Côte d’Azur retreat.

The final piece of the renovation was the reinvention of the outdoor pool space as a sexy, laid-back outdoor living room. Renamed La Plage, it’s a sun-drenched spot where guests can spend lazy hours lounging poolside on oversized chaises or underneath gauze draped canopies on day beds for two.

The Auberge’s French-accented California style and soft-spoken luxury echo the character of Napa Valley, a place to savor the bounty of fine food and wine and immerse oneself in an exquisite natural setting. Under the direction of Executive Chef Robert Curry, the Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil has earned international recognition, including back-to-back Michelin stars. Tables on the famous terrace are some of the most popular in the Valley, due to the panoramic views of the olive groves, vineyards and sunsets. In the spring of 2010, a rejuvenation of the restaurant’s outdoor dining deck was completed, giving the restaurant’s many fans a new reason to return and savor the perfect combination of fine cuisine and unparalleled scenery.

Since the inn’s opening, guests have been drawn to the Auberge for its privacy, tranquility and unmistakable romance. Romance and all that it entails — escape, total privacy, and the intimacy of having a beautiful spot to share — is an important part of the allure of Auberge du Soleil. Guests agree that a stay at the Auberge is a complete experience, with
equally superb components that complement one another: understated service, fine cuisine and atmosphere.

Auberge du Soleil’s Bistro & Bar Offers a Casual Dining Retreat for Sophisticated Palates

Chic, Yet Informal Dining Venue Showcases New Plat Du Jour Menu, Charcuterie And Rotating HouseMade Cocktail Infusions, All With Napa Valley’s Best View

RUTHERFORD, CALIFORNIA (January 2008) – Napa Valley’s legendary fine dining venue presents a new dining concept with its Bistro & Bar. For a taste of the Michelin-starred Restaurant without the commitment, guests enjoy the inspired setting with a myriad of cuisine options, from nibbles to heaping plates of gourmet comfort food. The Bistro & Bar features the “Plat du Jour” menu, specialty charcuterie & cheeses, and rotating house cocktail infusions by Bar Chef Colin McCarthy. Most importantly, the dining space gives Auberge fans a welcome addition to the varied experiences also offered — from the Restaurant to the La Plage pool bar, La Pagode, La Galerie and in-room dining – Bistro & Bar is the ultimate spot to pop by for a cocktail or linger and taste for hours.

The new “Plat du Jour” menu at Bistro & Bar features a signature Auberge dish, which rotates on a daily basis. Wednesday offers the comfort of Baby Back Ribs, Hoisin Glaze, Cole Slaw and Corn Bread for $22. Thursdays offer lighter fare with a delightful dish of Soba Noodles Swimming in Dashi Broth with Shrimp Tempura and Tagaroshi for $24. As a third example, Sunday will never be the same without the signature Steak Haché en Sous Vide with Traditional Garnish, Pommes Frites, and Black Truffle Oil for $21. The Bistro & Bar invites guests and neighbors to create their own weekly rituals, whether Saturdays mean Soy-Braised Beef on the outdoor patio or Mondays whisper a quiet evening indoors with Ricotta Ravioli.

Offering yet another way to dine, the Bistro & Bar has the finest in a variety of salame, cured meats, specialty meats, and homemade pates and terrines, meant to be mixed and matched according to the individual guest’s preferences. Auberge provides the absolute best choices for each category of meat, having searched locally in Napa, San Francisco and Berkeley to importing signature items from Italy. Highlights include Finocchiona, which is spiced with whole and ground fennel seeds at Fatted Calf in Napa and Lardo from Boccalone in San Francisco, where the cured back fat of winter pigs is seasoned with rosemary and juniper.

The resident Bar Chef Colin McCarthy believes any meal, whether small bites or heavier portions, deserves a drink to compliment the flavors of the dish. His “Vintage Revisited” section offers an artisanal approach to the classic cocktail with drinks like the “Dark & Stormy” with Hawaiian Sugarcane and the famous “Auberge Bloody Mary.”

He is continually inspired by the local gardens, mixing “Landscape” cocktails from herbs and produce grown on the hillside. McCarthy also infuses seasonal organic flavors into locally distilled Charbay Vodka, such as “Fall Fig” and “Tart Tatin.” And for those choosing to forgo alcohol, McCarthy offers a growing list of refreshing concoctions, including Ginger Ale with Muddled Lime and what he calls “Strawberry Sun,” a blend of fresh strawberry puree, Crème de Coconut, and juices of oranges and apples. In addition, Sommelier Kris Margerum’s wine list, the largest and most extensive in the valley, is available and showcases the very best from neighboring vineyards and around the world.

“The Bistro & Bar enhances the gastronomic experience for our guests, by offering the same attention to cuisine as the Auberge du Soleil Restaurant, but in a more casual and cozy environment” said Chef Robert Curry, who oversees all culinary aspects of Auberge du Soleil. “It further embodies the understated elegance, captivating Napa Valley location, and the traditions of both Napa Valley and French cuisine. We are delighted to extend this new concept to traveling guests and locals alike.”

Since 1981, the Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil has been serving award-winning cuisine paired with world-class wines to its legions of satisfied patrons. The restaurant offers culinary enthusiasts a range of dining options while still allowing them to enjoy French-inspired cuisine at one of the most revered establishments in North America. Under the Napa Valley Sun: Auberge du Soleil Offers Luxe Pool and Outdoor Living Room

‘Al Fresco’ Playground For Hotel Guests Brings The Laid-Back Elegance of The Riviera To Napa Valley

RUTHERFORD, CALIFORNIA (January 2008) –  Secluded, discreet and elegant, Auberge du Soleil has always been a hotel that could just as easily belong in the South of France as it does in the Napa Valley. With its sun-drenched pool and lounge space, the inn offers an exotic outdoor living room that blurs the lines between California Wine Country
    and the French Riviera.

Inspired by the famed small luxury hotels of the Mediterranean, including the Château de la Chèvre d’Or on the Côte d’Azur and Il Pellicano in Tuscany, designer Suzanne Tucker of San Francisco’s Tucker & Marks transformed the pool area in Spring 2007, and the space was christened La Plage. Tucker, who gave the iconic Michael Taylor-designed inn a stylish update, beginning with the Michelin-starred restaurant and bar, followed with the 50 guestrooms and the two spacious private maisons, culminating with the pool in 2007. The result is a sexy, laid-back venue, where guests can spend lazy hours lounging on oversized chaises or underneath gauze-draped canopies on day beds for two, sipping signature cocktails or wine from a neighboring vineyard. Middle-Eastern-styled Dedon lounge furniture imported from Germany and upholstered in the Auberge’s signature shade of persimmon match the two-toned oversized market umbrellas scattered throughout the four-tiered lounge area.

Rough-hewn Egyptian and Moroccan limestone in varying textures and honey, gold and walnut patinas give the pool area’s four hillside terraces a Provençal look. Two upper terraces, trellised for shade, overlook the pool. Lighter fare and cocktails can be enjoyed in a dining area clustered around a rustic fountain imported from France. Two additional lounge areas terrace down the hillside below the pool. Perfect for discreet sunbathing, this area features oversized chaises and a Michael Taylor Designs fountain as homage to the inn’s original designer. Custom-designed Moroccan-tile tables throughout the seating areas lend an Old-World atmosphere, while handcrafted Italian planters filled with rosemary, olive and lemon trees perfume the air.

“With La Plage, we give our esteemed hotel guests a little playground – somewhere sensual and intimate,” said Managing Partner George Goeggel. “After a day of wine tasting in the Valley, there is no better place to indulge in the sheer decadence of doing nothing at all.”

The centerpiece of the $1 million renovation was, of course, the pool itself, glowing under the warm California sun to reveal a pebble-sheen floor inlayed with an Italian mosaic, an iridescent Auberge sun crafted in mother-of-pearl. Honey-colored limestone accented with South American ipe wood creates a rustically elegant deck surrounding the pool.

Hotel guests can enjoy a host of poolside amenities, including Wifi and a DJ-mixed pool soundtrack heard through custom-designed sound system, cocktails and lounge food from Auberge du Soleil’s award-winning restaurant. Upon arrival poolside, guests are greeted with a signature Auberge Bellini, the first of an array of refreshing amenities, such as gourmet Italian ices, sorbets, gelées, chilled eucalyptus-infused towels and iPods, to be offered by doting attendants. Poolside dining from the Auberge’s award-winning restaurant is also available. Even the pool water is a departure from the ordinary, thanks to a new eco-friendly ozone-and-salt-based system that reduces chlorine usage and is gentle on both swimmers and the environment.

Auberge du Soleil is a distinctive property that captures the international atmosphere of today’s Napa Valley. Its restaurant, one of the first great Wine Country destination restaurants, pays tribute to its legacy with an award-winning menu and wine list. Luxurious accommodations, a renowned spa, exceptional cuisine and service earn Auberge du Soleil recognition year after year as one of the world’s most renowned small luxury hotels.

Auberge du Soleil Celebrates 25 Years as Napa Valley’s Landmark Restaurant

New Executive Chef Robert Curry Honors The Wine Country Vision Of Founder Claude Rouas

RUTHERFORD, CALIFORNIA (April 6, 2006) – Of the legions of Auberge du Soleil’s fans, few outside of California may be aware that the acclaimed “inn of the sun” actually began as a restaurant from renowned restaurateur Claude Rouas. This spring, the restaurant that added wine country cuisine to the culinary lexicon celebrates 25 years as Napa Valley’s first great dining destination and one of the most revered establishments in North America.

Rouas, a successful San Francisco restaurateur, opened the Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil in Napa Valley in 1981, causing a sensation among his customers, who questioned a location so far from the city. At the time, Napa was farm country, undiscovered as a dining or travel destination, with barely 14 wineries open for tastings. Rouas was struck by the valley’s similarity to Provence in his native France. Siting his elegantly rustic maison in a sun¬drenched olive grove at the top of a hill, he ensured that the Auberge’s exquisite cuisine would be matched with an equally ethereal setting.

The cuisine at the restaurant at Auberge du Soleil is the food of wine country elevated to its finest form. With a commitment to local, artisan ingredients and skillful preparation, the menu stays true to the vision set forth by Rouas and interpreted throughout the years by a series of acclaimed chefs who have held the top position – from Masa Kobayashi at the inception to new Executive Chef Robert Curry. Curry has taken the helm with the same mission as his predecessors – to create sublime meals to pair with wine in Napa’s most beautiful setting.

No chef speaks the language of wine country better than Curry, a California native who trained under Alain Ducasse and Michel Rostang in France and Wolfang Puck and Michel Richard in the U.S. Curry earned his Napa credentials during successful tenures at nearby Domaine Chandon and Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant before joining the Auberge in the summer of 2005. His menu reflects his new and old¬world sensibilities, with signature dishes such as Pan¬Seared Foie Gras With Poached Rhubarb, Baby Fennel And Red Wine Vanilla Jus; Poached Lobster, Avocado With Brioche And Orange Vanilla Vinaigrette; and Venison Tournedos With Sweet Potato Napoleon, Wild Mushrooms And Huckleberry Sauce.

Working in partnership with Curry to create the perfect pairing of food and wine is the Head Sommelier Kris Margerum. One of longest¬standing employees at the Auberge, Margerum has cultivated his palate during a more than 20¬year tenure, forming close relationships with Napa’s top winemakers and blind¬tasting 100 wines each week to assemble the restaurant’s wine list of 1,500 selections and 17,000¬bottle cellar.

Guests enjoying the fruits of Curry’s and Margerum’s labor savor beautifully balanced cuisine in a setting that’s every bit as unique. Originally designed by influential designer Michael Taylor, the restaurant and inn recently completed a significant renovation by Taylor’s former protégée, Suzanne Tucker of the renowned firm Tucker & Marks. Rich earthy interiors feature exposed beams, warm wood furnishings and striking abstract paintings. Oversized windows open onto the terrace, home to embracing valley views, lingering sunsets and some of the most sought¬after tables in the region.

The Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil is open daily for lunch and dinner. Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and dinner is served from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. For reservations, please call 800¬348-5406. More information is available at www.aubergedusoleil.com.

Vintage Napa Valley: Auberge du Soleil Celebrates 20 Years of Elegant Hospitality and Unveils a Stylish New Renovation

RUTHERFORD, CALIFORNIA (April 15, 2005) – Twenty years ago this spring, Auberge du Soleil, one of Northern California’s most revered dining establishments, opened the doors of its inn, a handful of maisons scattered across a 33-acre hillside olive grove in Napa Valley. This month, the acclaimed “Inn of the Sun” begins a new chapter in its history, as it unveils a sophisticated renovation, welcomes a new chef and offers new amenities created to elevate the art of relaxation for which the Auberge has become renowned.

“Auberge du Soleil brought a new style of informal elegance, luxury and service to the world of hospitality 20 years ago,” said George Goeggel, Managing Partner. “For many, it embodies the perfect retreat, and we’ve been pleased to see how many guests have returned again and again throughout the years. Few hotels age gracefully. At 20, the Auberge is better than ever.”

The inn completed the dream of noted San Francisco restaurateur Claude Rouas, who envisioned a tribute to his beloved Provence in the California wine country. Rouas is attributed with bringing a renaissance to Napa Valley when he opened the Auberge du Soleil Restaurant in 1981. It was an instant sensation, attracting discerning diners from Northern California and beyond with its airy, elegant Mediterranean style and Frenchinfluenced, locally sourced cuisine.

In 1985, Rouas and business partner Robert Harmon opened the inn. As with the restaurant, the maisons – or cottages – were the work of influential designer Michael Taylor, who infused his “California Style” of overscaled furniture, dramatic fabrics and sculptural accessories with the essence of Provence. The suites enchanted guests with their elegantly rustic furnishings, handmade tile floors, abstract paintings, beds dressed in bright fuschia and gold and French doors leading to private terraces and sweeping views of the valley below.

In 1988, the inn joined Relais & Châteaux, the most prestigious collection of small luxury hotels and restaurants in the world.

Today, 20 years later, the Auberge dazzles again with a fresh, updated look that pays tribute to Michael Taylor’s original vision. It is the work of San Francisco designer Suzanne Tucker, of renowned interior design firm Tucker & Marks, who was Taylor’s assistant on the original Auberge. In her renovation, she was loyal to her mentor, going straight for the bold and designing luxuriously overscale furniture, richly covered bedcovers and heavy limestone countertops.

Tucker designed custom furniture with a historic basis for the rooms. Oversized braided rope lounges and ottomans were inspired by 1940s pieces at a hotel in Juan les Pins. Cream matelasse bedcovers are accented with stunning persimmon coverlets and bolsters. Made in France, the fabric is a copy of a vintage Pierre Frey design that Taylor liked. Tucker had stashed a few yards years before and recently commissioned Frey’s Paris subsidiary Margueroy to custom¬dye and weave the fabric exclusively for the Auberge. Cerused hand¬stained oak and wheat-colored limestone replaces the tilecovered countertops for a rich finish. The result is a bright, warm look that’s updated, yet bold in Taylor’s fashion and reminiscent of a secluded Côte d’Azur retreat.

No 21st Century renovation would be complete without a few high¬tech touches. All suites at the Auberge now feature plasma televisions in both sitting areas and bedrooms. Bathrooms in all rooms and suites feature 15-inche flat screen televisions for viewing from the extra-large soaking tubs. DVD players and wireless Internet access are also standard in all guestrooms.

In the Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil, new Executive Chef Robert Curry welcomes guests with beautifully prepared Wine Country cuisine. Curry has brought his own fan base to the Auberge, having spent six years as Executive Chef at nearby Domaine Chandon. Most recently, he was Executive Chef across the valley at the Wine Auberge Du Soleil Celebrates 20 Years And Unveils A Stylish New Renovation Spectator Greystone Restaurant at the Culinary Institute of America. A native of Los Angeles, Curry began his career working with Wolfgang Puck at Ma Cuisine and later, with Michel Richard and Alain Giraud at Citrus. After traveling the world and training with Alain Ducasse, Michel Rostang and other renowned chefs, he was lured to Napa Valley, where he has established a reputation as one of Wine Country’s finest.

Renovated recently by Tucker, the Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil features rich interiors accented with abstract paintings, exposed beams and warm wood furnishings. Tables on the famous terrace are some of the most sought-after in the Valley, due to the panoramic views of the olive groves, vineyards and sunsets. The adjacent bar, now updated with in a relaxed contemporary style, is an inviting setting in which to sip a cocktail by the fire, dine on lighter fare al fresco or enjoy one of the 35 wines served by the glass.

After a meal in the dining room or overlooking the valley from the dramatic terrace, guests are invited to feed their aesthetic soul by viewing the many works of art on display throughout the grounds. The inn’s new I. Wolk Gallery features a carefully curated selection of contemporary paintings, works on paper and small-scale sculptures. The gallery also serves as a gateway to the Auberge’s existing collection of more than 100 outdoor sculptures. So integral are the visual arts to the Auberge du Soleil experience that the inn has introduced a new art amenity. Easels, paints and brushes, pencils and pastels are now available at no charge for plein air painting and drawing in the magical setting of lush gardens and olive groves

Spa du Soleil, the Auberge’s hillside spa, recently unveiled the Melisse Suite, a spacious spa suite for romantic pairs or four friends, featuring a fireplace, private tanning deck and heated private pool. Guests can relax in total privacy as they gaze through floor¬to¬ceiling windows at the panoramic view of Napa Valley and sip a pre¬treatment elixir. After enjoying side¬by¬side treatments, they can soak in a heated private pool overlooking the Valley. Many of the preparations used in the spa treatments feature house-infused oils, as well as calendula, rosemary, lemon balm and other herbs cultivated by the therapists in the spa’s new garden.

When Napa Valley’s Best Sommelier Gets a Taste for the Spa…

It Leads To A Sensory Treat Of Wines Paired With Signature Treatments at Auberge Spa

RUTHERFORD, CALIFORNIA (April 2005) – To most, Napa Valley evokes images of sublime sensory experiences – the taste of superb cuisine prepared by renowned local chefs; the bouquet of a Napa Valley vintage swirled in a glass; vivid reds and golds of the vines turning color in the fall; and the blissful touch of a seasoned spa therapist. At Auberge du Soleil, such sensory experiences complement one another with Auberge Spa’s wine and spa pairings, enjoyed in the one of the most serene and picturesque retreats in the California Wine Country.

“Auberge Spa is a place where guests reconnect with themselves, each other and nature in an intimate environment,” said Spa Director Amy Wilson-Moghina. “Our wine pairings complement that experience by indulging the senses and blending the aromas of the treatments and the wines.”

The pairings are a collaboration of the spa and Auberge du Soleil’s Head Sommelier Kris Margerum. A veteran with more than 20 years experience at Auberge du Soleil, Margerum has spent years developing close relationships with the top winemakers of the region to assemble the hotel’s wine list of 1,500 selections and 17,000-bottle cellar – the largest in the Valley.

“Just as wine complements food for a memorable dining experience, the right wine can complement the notes and fragrances of spa treatments, creating an unforgettable sensory experience,” said Margerum.

Upon entering their serene garden treatment rooms at Auberge Spa, guests are offered a glass of wine and invited to savor the aromas of the treatment’s botanical ingredients. The sommelier’s accompanying tasting notes discuss the features of the wine and why it was selected to complement the particular treatment. While new pairings are continually offered, examples of spa treatment-wine pairings include:

    • Rosemary and Grape Seed Foot Scrub paired with the 2005 Swanson Oakville Merlot (Napa Valley)
This merlot has balanced fruit with subtle earth and herbal notes, which are brought to life wonderfully by the matching aromatics of grape seeds and rosemary that are a part of this treatment.
    • Body Purifier Bath Salts paired with the 2007 Hirsch (Austria)
This Heiligenstein matches aromas of minerals, citrus and light spice. The mild perfume of the body purifier salts enhances the white pepper notes in this crisp white wine, making the aroma even more complex.
    • Honey Rose Sugar Scrub and Rose Oil paired with the 2001 Gattinara Nebbiolo (Italy)
As Nebbiolo ages, the aroma of rose petals develops in the wine bouquet. The elegant floral aroma of this wine is accentuated as the air fills the room with the scent of roses.

Created for the exclusive use of the inn’s guests, Auberge Spa occupies a 7,000- square-foot building overlooking the Napa Valley. Anchored by a central courtyard punctuated by fountains and 100- year old olive trees, the spa reflects the French country inn charm and elegant simplicity of Auberge du Soleil. The seven treatment rooms – including three designed specifically for couples – surround the courtyard, each bathed in natural light streaming through French doors that lead to a private garden with outdoor shower or tub. Spa treatment-wine pairings at Auberge Spa are offered daily and are complimentary.

‘Beans & Greens’ Take Center Stage at the Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil

Executive Chef Robert Curry Creates Delectable Vegetarian Tasting Menu

RUTHERFORD, CALIFORNIA (April 2005) – For more than 25 years, the Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil has served award-winning cuisine paired with world-class wines to its legions of satisfied patrons. A newer option at the Michelin-starred restaurant is the vegetarian tasting menu, which gives guests and culinary enthusiasts alternatives that are lighter and meat-free, though still prepared with the same creativity and exquisite attention to detail as the restaurant’s legendary French-influenced cuisine.

The vegetarian tasting menu is the brainchild of Executive Chef Robert Curry, who envisioned an option for guests seeking lighter fare after visits to Napa Valley wineries and feasting on rich cuisine at many of the area’s top restaurants.

The vegetarian menu selections reflect Chef Curry’s extensive experience in the traditions of both Napa Valley and France, as proven by the innovative combination of fresh local ingredients prepared in classic French style. His signature vegetarian dishes include: Burrata, Little Gem, Haricots Verts, Tomato Confit and Basil; Heirloom Tomato Risotto with Arugula and Yuzu Emulsion; Potato Gnocchi with Porcini Mushrooms and Parmesan Nage; and “Soucrest”Peaches, Raspberries, Lemon Verbena Ice Milk, Brioche Crisps.

“We recognize that not all our guests want an elaborate dinner paired with a traditional progression of wine, but are instead, looking for choices and lighter dining options,” said Executive Chef Robert Curry. “With the new vegetarian tasting menu, we invite guests to mix their dining experience at Auberge du Soleil and challenge their perception of what a memorable fine-dining experience constitutes.”

The vegetarian selections can be enjoyed as a prix fixe menu for $98 per guest, $134 per guest paired with wine, or à la carte.

The Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil is open daily for lunch and dinner. Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and dinner is served from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. For reservations, please call 800- 348-5406. More information is available at www.aubergedusoleil.com.

Executive Chef, Auberge du Soleil – Robert Curry

RUTHERFORD, CALIFORNIA (April 2005) – As Executive Chef of Auberge du Soleil, Robert Curry oversees all culinary aspects of the renowned Napa Valley inn and Michelin-starred restaurant, which will celebrate its 30th
    anniversary in April 2011.

Curry’s menu reflects his extensive experience in the traditions of both Napa Valley and France, which continue to inspire the cuisine at Auberge du Soleil. His signature dishes include: White Corn Soup with Rock Shrimp and Chervil Oil; Seared Ono with Wakame, Tempura Maitake, Glazed Pork Belly, and Dashi; Bacon Wrapped Veal with Foie Gras Ravioli, Sugar Snap Peas and Wild Mushrooms; and Liberty Farm Duck with Figs, Hearts of Palm, Fennel, Arugula and Port Beet Sauce.

Curry brings to the Auberge a passion for Wine Country cuisine cultivated at awardwinning restaurants in the Valley, on both coasts and in Europe. Prior to joining Auberge du Soleil in spring of 2005, he served as Executive Chef at the Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant at the Culinary Institute of America in St. Helena, Calif. There, his menus showcased ingredients harvested daily from Greystone’s own organic garden and the bounty of local farmers and purveyors. Prior to that, he launched the Flying Fish Café, the fine-dining seafood restaurant at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla. Curry made a name for himself early on among Northern California food lovers during his eight years at Domaine Chandon in Yountville, Calif., first serving as Executive Sous Chef under Philippe Jeanty and ultimately succeeding him as Executive Chef.

A native of Los Angeles, Curry began his culinary career there in 1986 at Ma Cuisine, Wolfgang Puck and Patrick Terrail’s cooking school, during which time he received his degree from the Culinary Institute of America, Hyde Park, N.Y. Following graduation, he was recruited by Michael Richard and Alain Giraud for Citrus Restaurant. In the late ‘90s, he traveled the world to study cuisine, working with Alain Ducasse at his three-star Louis XV in the Hotel de Paris; with Joseph Thuet at the Moët & Chandon Résidence de Trianon in Epernay, France; and in Paris at the two-star Michel Rostang.

Head Sommelier, Auberge du Soleil – Kris Margerum

RUTHERFORD, CALIFORNIA (April 2005) – As Head Sommelier at Napa Valley’s Auberge du Soleil, Kris Margerum follows a simple philosophy when selecting wine for the inn’s Michelin-starred restaurant: One plus one can equal three. The right wine complements the food, and together, they create an unforgettable experience. Margerum has been in pursuit of the perfect food and wine pairings at the iconic wine country inn for more than 25 years, during which time he has developed close relationships with the top wine makers of Napa Valley. His wine list currently offers 1,500 selections from a 17,000-bottle cellar and has been awarded Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence for the past five years.

Margerum works in partnership with Executive Chef Robert Curry to create exquisite food and wine pairings for the six-course Chef’s Menu and all of the other dishes Curry dreams up for the Restaurant and the more casual Bistro and Bar. Margerum is also responsible for the restaurant staff’s wine education and conducts wine tastings and advanced-level winery tours for them on a regular basis.

“A few of years ago, I started conducting blind tastings,” recalls Margerum. “This allows me to evaluate each wine on its own merits, without prejudice. I taste more than 100 wines a week to find four or five that meet my ideals and make the wine list and hope our guests can benefit from knowing that each wine has been hand selected.”

Margerum has developed wine lists for a number of other Auberge Resorts’ properties, including the opening wine list for Esperanza in Los Cabos, Mexico and for Calistoga Ranch in Napa Valley. More recently, he turned his attention to Auberge Spa, where he pairs wines by the glass with the floral or herbal notes in a selection of spa treatments to create the ultimate wine country spa experience. His newest project, a collaboration with Auberge pastry chef Paul Lemieux, showcases Margerum’s passion for Madeira wines and Lemieux’s talent with confections in an after-dinner presentation of Madeiras and house-made chocolates.

Margerum’s career with Auberge du Soleil spans more than 25 years. Prior to being appointed head sommelier in 1999, he acted as the restaurant’s assistant food and beverage director for six years, helping to oversee daily operations, planning, budgeting, forecasting, hiring and reviews, monthly inventories and guest satisfaction management. Before that, he acted as assistant restaurant manager for the Auberge and was promoted to restaurant manager after a year. He began his career at Auberge du Soleil in the dining room as a server.

Margerum is a graduate of the Sterling School of Service and created the Napa Valley Sommelier Society, which meets quarterly at various Napa Valley restaurants to discuss common issues and strategies – and, of course, to taste wine.

Executive Pastry Chef, Auberge du Soleil – Paul Lemieux

RUTHERFORD, CALIFORNIA (April 2005) – Executive Pastry Chef at Auberge du Soleil, Paul Lemieux is the creative force behind the delectable desserts and confections produced in the kitchen at this renowned Napa Valley inn.

At the 80-seat dining room at Michelin-starred Auberge du Soleil, Lemieux offers an outstanding seasonal dessert and cheese menu. He created the Auberge Torte au Chocolat, the inn’s signature dessert. Lemieux handcrafts each torte with 11 layers of crisp hazelnut dacquoise, exquisitely smooth chocolate crémeux, fresh pureed organic hazelnuts and intensely rich dark chocolate ganache and ships them daily to fans nationwide. His sweet touch is evident throughout the resort, from the house-made confitures served at breakfast, to the chocolate-hazelnut truffles, pistachio caramels and amandes au chocolat he pairs with vintage Madeiras after dinner, and the pâte de fruits given to all dinner guests as a thoughtful parting gift.

Lemieux’s passion and creativity in the art of pastry making are the result of nearly 20 years of experience honed at renowned restaurants throughout the United States. A native of Wisconsin, he spent time developing his skills at top restaurants on both coasts. He began his career after graduating Magna cum Laude from Johnson & Wales University College of Culinary Arts in Providence, R.I., in 1992. After early stints as a chef and pastry chef on the East Coast, he made the move to San Francisco, where he worked with renowned chef Traci Des Jardins at Rubicon. Recognizing his talent and passion for confections and chocolates, Des Jardins mentored Lemieux and, in 1996, appointed him pastry chef. A year later, she asked him to join her as pastry chef at her new namesake restaurant, Jardinière. An instant success, Lemieux continued to demonstrate his creativity in the world of desserts, adapting his own style of simple and pure flavors and focusing on fresh and seasonal ingredients in each dish.

Lemieux quickly was recognized as a true culinary star, earning critical acclaim by Gourmet magazine, which referred to him as “San Francisco’s up-and-coming pastry star.” His passion for chocolate was well known, and in 2002, he founded, with wife Michele, Paul Lemieux Chocolates, a Portland, Ore., small-production company creating artisan truffles with organic ingredients purveyed from local farmers. He was lured back into the restaurant world in 2002, when he was recruited to the position of pastry chef at Lucere Restaurant at Portland’s Riverplace Hotel. In 2003, his culinary journey led Lemieux to the Napa Valley, where he has flourished, not only as the creative mastermind behind Auberge du Soleil’s unforgettable desserts, but also in his role as educator at the Culinary Institute of America, where, as Adjunct Baking and Pastry Instructor, he trains and mentors the next generation of pastry chefs.
